I always keep an eye out for objects that define dramatic luxury, and Town Studio at the Denver Design Center certainly delivers. Recently I had popped into Town Studio looking for a sectional sofa. This showroom always has different and interesting furnishings, but this time something else grabbed my attention. A man sitting at the counter caught my eye. In his red striped shirt and funky tortoise glasses, he stood out against the quiet colors of the showroom. I knew immediately that he had to be a designer!
It was John Lyle of John Lyle Design, the Manhattan-based designer responsible for the Taylor Eggshell Lacquer Table featured in the February Elle Decor that everyone’s gone gaga for. John was in Town at the Design Center showing his new dramatic finishes (including the Eggshell Lacquer), and we started chatting. He’s a warm and charming Southerner from Mississippi, as well as an innovative designer who makes beautiful creations.

Dramatic Luxury of John’s Tables
I asked him to show us his work in Town Studio, so he took us on a tour. Coincidence had it that he was also the creator of a cocktail table I’d just been admiring called Vestal, and its base is a replica of oversize nails in a vertical weld. It sits low and wide, and John’s keen sense of proportion and weight make it elegant and fun.

I was delighted at the variety of his designs – in contrast to the Vestal’s weight and nails, he showed us these darling side tables called Hexagon Trio with a luxury appeal in lacquered linen. They have a sense of weightlessness that I find attractive.

We ended up taking a picture around his Edwin table. It is an elegant example of dramatic luxury, shown at Town Studio in the polished bronze base with rock crystal top. It’s wonderful!

What I really like about John’s work are the finishes he embraces. Can you picture the irreverence of John Lyle’s designs in your home? I certainly can.
The Denver Design Center never fails to impress or surprise in one way or another. Instead of the sofa I set out to find, I found tables – you never know what or who you will stumble into in the Design world.
